Digital News Subscription Tax Credit

To support Canadian journalism, the government offers a non-refundable tax credit for subscriptions to Qualifying Canadian Journalism Organizations (QCJO).

The Benefit

You can claim up to $500 per year for eligible digital news subscriptions. The credit is calculate at the lowest personal income tax rate (15%), meaning you could get a maximum tax reduction of $75.

Eligible Subscriptions

The subscription must be for digital content (e.g., website access, e-newspaper) provided by a QCJO. Common examples likely include major Canadian digital papers like The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, La Presse, etc. (Check their invoices, they usually state eligibility).

How to content

Keep your receipt! Line 31350 on your T1 return is where you enter the total amount paid. If you share a subscription with a spouse or partner, you can split the claim, but the total combined claim cannot exceed $500.

This credit is currently slated to expire, so make sure to take advantage of it while it's available.
